From his humble beginning, Hamdan Azhar fought his way to the top of the biostatistics field and reinvented ways to interpret data in social and political climates. But his journey to discovering and re-inventing data science wasn’t an easy one. From working on Ron Paul’s presidential campaign to applying emoji as a data source to current news, Hamdan talks with Kazuki about the people who encouraged him down that path, and his realization and pursuit for interpreting data in a new direction.

Hamdan Azhar is a data scientist passionate about using data to tell meaningful stories about human behavior. He previously worked in ads research at Facebook where he designed experiments to measure the effectiveness of Facebook ads. Prior to that, he worked at an ads tech startup and was the national statistician on Ron Paul’s 2012 presidential campaign.
In his side life as a journalist, Hamdan’s writings on political data, drone culture, and religion in America have been published in Forbes, VICE, the Washington Post, and the Christian Science Monitor. Hamdan, a New York native, holds a master’s degree in biostatistics from the University of Michigan, a bachelor’s in economics from Penn State, and spent one year in the neuroscience Ph.D. program at the University of Chicago.
